Our Vision For Building a Greater Exeter
We are helping shape the future construction workforce across Exeter, East Devon, Mid Devon and Teignbridge, by:
- Inspiring young people and career changers to choose construction
- Supporting employers by facilitating recruitment
- Creating a culture that makes the built environment a great place to work
Building Greater Exeter exists to close the skills gap in construction, to address a shortage of workers within the sector and for developments to have a positive local impact around social value.
Building Greater Exeter is a collaborative between local authorities, contractors, educational establishments, recruitment firms and allied professional services with the aim to work together to meet its objectives.

The Three Pillars
Schools and Young Person Engagement
We will inspire and support young people in exploring careers in construction. Key initiatives include:
- Engaging students through events and work experience
- Promoting local role models
- Providing resources on 180+ construction roles
- Showcasing career pathways
- Addressing parental concerns
- Fostering diversity and inclusion
Adult Engagement
We will support adults, including ex-forces, care leavers, and those seeking to reskill by producing experiences promoting a culture that makes Construction and the Built Environment a great place to work. We will:
- Offer information, advice and guidance
- Raise awareness of construction job vacancies
- Connect to employment opportunities
- Support training through local providers
- Inspire participation through careers activities
Skills & Employment Plans
We will ensure Employment and Skills Plans are integral to major development proposals in Greater Exeter through collaboration with local planning authorities. We will provide:
- Guidance to mandatory and voluntary adopters
- Raise awareness among partner organisations
- Foster wide stakeholder engagement
- Develop best practice models to maximise community opportunities
